With more than two decades in numerous management roles from Capitol Hill to the private sector, John Leary is considered an expert at leveraging technology for public affairs and strategic communications challenges.
John Leary is the founder and Managing Partner of Dominion Strategies, an award-winning public affairs and strategic communications firm. John oversees day-to-day firm management and provides strategic counsel to numerous clients with diverse issue interests, including aviation, education, energy and the environment, financial services, health care, and transportation, among others.
Prior to founding Dominion Strategies, John served in senior management positions at two public affairs firms and served as the Director of the Division of Political & Grassroots Membership at the American Medical Association. At the AMA, John directed fundraising for AMPAC, one of the nation's largest political action committees, as well as directed recruitment and retention of all AMA political and grassroots assets. At the AMA, John conceived, created, and directed the AMA Patients’ Action Network, a 1.5- million-member volunteer patient advocacy organization, recruited solely online.
John has served as a staff member in the U.S. Congress and in a state legislature, and has held senior positions with Winner/Wagner & Associates, Edison Electric Institute, and State Net. John’s campaign experience includes a stint at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), as well as work on numerous campaigns for federal, state, and local offices.
John has been a featured speaker on the subject of online constituency development before groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Public Affairs Council, the National Association of Business Political Action Committees (NABPAC), and The George Washington University, among others. He has won several Pollie Awards for his innovative online public affairs campaigns.
John holds a BA in government and international studies from the University of South Carolina. An active sportsman, musician, and patron, John is a member of several professional, community, charitable, and social organizations. He is a 5th-generation native of Alexandria, Virginia, where he resides with his wife, Maureen, and their three sons.
